เจอบทความนี้ใน NYTimes พูดถึงว่าทำไม Trump ผลงานแย่ขนาดนี้ ถึงมีคนเลือกมาตั้ง 70 กว่าล้านเสียง ทำเอา Democrats หืดจับกว่าจะโค่นลงได้
บทความค่อนข้างสำบัดสำนวน อ่านยากประมาณนึง แต่ตัดเอามาแบบสรุปๆ เหตุผลมี 3 ข้อ
Three factors — the logic of partisan polarization, which inaccurate polling obscured; the strength of the juiced pre-Covid-19 economy; and the success of Mr. Trump’s denialist, open-everything-up nonresponse to the pandemic — mostly explain why Democrats didn’t fare better.
This shocking strategy worked for Republicans, even if it didn’t pan out for the president himself.
ข้อแรกคือ partisan politics ในอเมริกา ที่แตกแยกเป็นสองขั้ว ทำให้การวัดผลงานของนักการเมืองทำได้ยาก เพราะต่างฝ่ายต่างเล่าเรื่องในมุมของตัวเองที่แตกต่างกันมาก (เคยเขียนถึงเรื่องนี้ไว้ใน Trump and Prayuth) และ Trump เองก็ใช้ประโยชน์จากปัจจัยนี้ บิดการเข้าถึงข้อมูลของฐานเสียงตัวเอง

อย่างไรก็ตาม รอบนี้ Trump บิดไม่สำเร็จเหมือนปี 2016 (ด้วยเหตุผลหลายๆ อย่าง) ซึ่งผู้เขียนก็บอกว่าประชาธิปไตยอเมริกันมันก็มีวิธีการแก้ไขตัวเอง (self-correction) ของมันอยู่นะ

ข้อที่สองคือ ต้องยอมรับว่าเศรษฐกิจอเมริกาในยุค Trump เป็นประธานาธิบดีใหม่ๆ มันดีจริง ผมคิดว่ามาจาก 2 ปัจจัยคือ เศรษฐกิจมันค่อยๆ ฟื้นตัวขึ้นมาเองโดยธรรมชาติ (นับจากปี 2008) ดังนั้นใครมาเป็นประธานาธิบดีต่อจาก Obama ก็น่าจะได้ปัจจัยนี้
อีกปัจจัยคือตัวนโยบายของ Trump ที่เน้นกระตุ้นเศรษฐกิจ ลดดอกเบี้ย (แต่ก็ขาดดุลงบประมาณ สร้างหนี้สาธารณะ ซึ่งไม่มีใครสนใจเพราะไม่ใช่ปากท้องโดยตรง) ทำให้เห็นผลชัดเจนว่าตัวเรารวยขึ้น มีเงินจ่ายคล่องมือ
Mr. Trump’s relentless campaign to goose the economy by cutting taxes, running up enormous deficits and debt, and hectoring the Fed into not raising rates was working for millions of Americans. We tend to notice when we’re personally more prosperous than we were a few years before.
ข้อสุดท้ายคือ กลยุทธ์ของ Trump ในการโยนความรับผิดชอบด้านการปิดเมืองให้กับผู้ว่าการรัฐหรือท้องถิ่น การก่อดราม่าไม่ใส่หน้ากาก ไม่ปิดเมือง การติดเชื้อไวรัสเป็นเรื่องตลกชิวๆ กลับเวิร์คขึ้นมาซะอย่างนั้น
การต้องเลือกระหว่างแนวทาง “เปิดเมืองเพื่อเศรษฐกิจ เพื่อปากท้อง” ของ Trump กับแนวทาง “ปิดเมือง เพราะเราเชื่อในวิทยาศาสตร์” ของฝั่ง Democrats พิสูจน์แล้วว่า แนวทางแรกเข้าใจง่ายกว่า และ Democrats ตอบโต้เรื่องการสื่อสารได้ไม่ดีเท่าไร
Mr. Trump abdicated responsibility, shifting the burden onto states and municipalities with busted budgets. He then waged a war of words against governors and mayors — especially Democrats — who refused to risk their citizens’ lives by allowing economic and social activity to resume.
